Ovarian Cyst

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms on the ovary. These cysts can vary in size, ranging from very small to as large as a grapefruit. Most ovarian cysts are harmless and go away on their own without treatment. However, some ovarian cysts may cause symptoms such as pelvic pain, bloating, pressure, or discomfort during intercourse.

There are several types of ovarian cysts, including functional cysts, which are the most common and form as a normal part of the menstrual cycle. Other types include dermoid cysts, which contain tissue such as hair, skin, or teeth, endometriomas, which form as a result of endometriosis, and cystadenomas, which develop from ovarian tissue.

In some cases, ovarian cysts can rupture or cause the ovary to twist (torsion), leading to severe pain and potentially serious complications.

TREATMENT

  • SURGERY

Surgery should be done if the symptoms is severe. There are two options in terms of surgeries the first one is laparoscopy and the other is laparotomy.

  • LAPAROSCOPY

A laparoscope (a small, lighted microscope) is passed into your abdomen through minimal incisions. Most types of cysts can be removed using laparoscopy. This is done so that the surgeon can see the internal organs. Laparoscopy is more preferred compare to laparotomy because of fast recovery time.

  • LAPAROTOMY

If there is a sign of cancer in cyst then surgeons preferred laparotomy.
