Myomectomy

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove uterine fibroids, also known as myomas or leiomyomas. Unlike a hysterectomy, which involves the complete removal of the uterus, a myomectomy specifically targets and removes only the fibroids while preserving the uterus.

Myomectomy is typically recommended for women who wish to preserve their fertility or avoid the need for a hysterectomy. It can help alleviate symptoms associated with fibroids, such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure. However, there is a possibility that fibroids may grow back after myomectomy, especially if multiple fibroids are present or if the woman is still in her reproductive years.

Recovery time after myomectomy varies depending on the type of procedure performed and individual factors. Most women can return to normal activities within a few weeks following the surgery.

TREATMENT

Laparoscopic Myomectomy is a procedure for the treatment of fibroids. It involves the surgical removal of fibroids. Unlike hysterectomy, myomectomy does not involve the removal of the womb (uterus), making it the preferred procedure for women who have desire for childbirth.  Myomectomy also enhances the chances of pregnancy after removal of fibroids but does not guarantee it.

Your doctor might recommend myomectomy for fibroids causing symptoms that are troublesome or interfere with your normal activities. Some of the  reasons to choose myomectomy for fibroid treatment are

  • To have a child
  • Your doctor suspects uterine fibroids might be interfering with your fertility
  • You want to keep your uterus
